RAIN FORCES PREMATURE END TO THE S & S CYCLE MID-ATLANTIC NATIONALS AT MARYLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, JULY 17TH AND 18TH

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., July 20, 2004 Inclement weather conditions took over at Maryland International Raceway just shy of the completion of Saturday's second round of qualifying at the S & S Cycle Mid-Atlantic Nationals Presented by All American Harley-Davidson and Harley-Davidson of Frederick in Budd's Creek, MD.

Over 200 competitors were participating while a record Saturday crowd watched before the skies darkened and rain arrived, forcing the cancellation of remaining qualifying rounds and eventually Sunday's eliminations.

Although the rain took a break in the mid-morning hours on Sunday, Maryland International Raceway's track promoter, Royce Miller, estimated a minimum 3-hour track-drying process with the radar showing more rain moving in which indeed was the case following the announcement to cancel eliminations.

AHDRA policy leaves the event complete "as is" with qualified racers in each field receiving first-round payout; racers yet to qualify will be refunded race tech fees.

Qualified competitors will receive first-round points from the Maryland race along with earned qualifying points.

Mike Romine of Sturgis, MI, was leading the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley field with only one round completed, coming off the trailer with a 6.675 at 211.39 mph. Drums Brancaccio of Nutley, NJ, was in the second spot with a 6.793 at 198.58 mph, and champion Doug Vancil was third with a 6.845 at 166.19 mph.

In JIMS Pro Fuel, Steve Simmons of Greensboro, NC, was in the top spot after one pass with a 7.267 at 170.79 mph, and Tony Ruggiero traveled from Fresno, CA, to finish the weekend in the #2 qualifying spot with a 7.764 at 175.46 mph.

S & S Cycle Pro Gas racers were under way with a second round of qualifying just as the rain moved in, leaving David Delullo of St. Mary's, PA, in the #1 position with a 7.984 at 161.17 mph.

Local favorite Frank Dove, from Hughesville, MD, was in the #2 spot with an 8.370 at 155.13 mph, and Keith Browne of Semora, NC, came away with the #3 position while testing for his Pro Gas license with an 8.507 at 118.29 mph.

The Truett-Jones points battle in Kresto Pro Drag will have to pick up in Brainerd, MN, later in the month, after qualifying and eliminations were halted in Maryland. Junior Pippin of Conyers, GA, was right at home in the #1 spot in the Joker Machine Pro Modified field with his 8.506 at 149.90 mph qualifying pass, while Ohio's Paul Smith was in the second spot with an 8.552 at 151.36 mph.

Thanks to Mother Nature, the anticipation of the inevitable Sternotti-Lummus match-up will be on hold until they meet in Brainerd. Both riders stepped up in round two, and the order was shuffled when Sternotti laid down a 9.054 at 146.91 mph to Lummus's 9.181 at 146.18 mph, leaving them qualified #1 and #2 respectively.

Statesville, NC's Tripp Nobles led the Screamin' Eagle V-Rod class after two rounds with a 9.910 at 137.01 mph, with Dave Pressley coming in second with a 10.226 at 132.97 mph.
