A RECORD-BREAKING WEEKEND AT STONE MOUNTAIN HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOUTHERN NATIONALS, ATLANTA DRAGWAY

WINSTON-SALEM, NC, May 28, 2003 - AHDRA completed a weekend of high-thrill action and record-breaking competition at the Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson Southern Nationals, May 24th and 25th, at Commerce, Georgia's Atlanta Dragway.

David Feazell (Hudson, IA) finished the weekend with multiple records in S & S Pro Stock competition with a new 7.385 E.T. and 181.79 mph record in the quarter mile and a 4.715 E.T. eighth mile record.

Despite Feazell's accomplishments, it was Dirk Higgins (Kirby, OH) taking home the trophy in a side-by-side final with Feazell. Higgins got the early advantage with a .411 light to Feazell's .464 and was first to the stripe with a 7.525 at 171.25 over Feazell's 7.544 at 171.31 mph.

Travis Lummus (Asheville, NC) bettered his own records in the Rivera-Primo Street Pro category with a 9.163 1/4 mile E.T. and a 5.852 1/8th mile E.T. in Saturday's qualifying. Lummus celebrated the records but without the trophy after a rare red-light foul in round one of eliminations sent him to the trailer early.

Doug Morrow (Daytona Beach, FL) made his season debut at Atlanta Dragway with consistency that ultimately led him to the winners circle with a 9.304/142.76 finish over Donnie Huffman's (Lakeland, FL) 9.963/130.87 lap.

David Atkins (Bradenton, FL) is hot, to say the least, in Dragmasters Hot Street action. Atkins has won three out of three in the brand-new class and broke his own records in Georgia with 10.561 1/4 mile E.T. and 6.663 at 103.12 mph in the 1/8th mile. Nicholas Gonatas (Youngstown, OH) was Atkins' competition in the final round; although Gonatas was first off the line, Atkins' record-breaking 10.561 drove him to victory lane over the 11.221 from Gonatas.

No records were set, but there was no shortage of excitement or horsepower, either, when the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harleys hit the track. Steve Stordeur (Goshen, OH) was top qualifier with a 6.461 and top speed of 215.62 mph going into eliminations. It only got better on Sunday when Stordeur bettered his qualifying time with a 6.455/215.13 pass in round two over Orangeburg, SC's Bill Furr. Facing the "boss" - bike owner and teammate Johnny Mancuso (Houston, TX) - in round three, Stordeur came out on top with a 6.488 at 213.30 mph. Making it up to the boss man, Stordeur went on to the final and grabbed the win over a determined Jay Turner (Whitsett, NC). Turner had the better reaction time (.484), but Stordeur was first to the scoreboard with a 6.580 at 209.23 mph over Team Bulldogs' 6.695 at 185.56 mph.

Turner may have been trying to catch his breath after having driven his JIMS Pro Fuel entry to a victory over Chris Streeter (Cleveland, OH) just moments earlier. Streeter commented that his best runs are with Turner, and the two battled it out to the finish with a 7.048/195.70 from Turner and a 7.092/183.17 from Streeter. To cheers from the crowd, Turner was towed to the starting line, where he jumped off the Pro Fuel bike, marched to the line, and mounted the Top Fuel Nitro Harley, seeking a double win - which was halted by Stordeur.

One more for the record books when "ladies first" held true in Performance Corner Super Eliminator competition and the Nonpareil Super Sport class. For the first-time, double-female win in AHDRA's history, Julia Holliday (N. Springfield, PA) and Wanda Poff (York, PA) won their classes respectively. Susie Wevodau (Harrisburg, PA) was the #1 qualifier in the Super Sport category and was close to the all-female final before Craig Drago beat her in the semis.

ESPN2's Inside Drag Racing cameras were rolling at Atlanta Dragway. Fans can catch the highlights on June 29 at 12:30 p.m. (EST) and June 30 at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
