Mark Cox Repeats Victory at Rockingham Dragway; Number One Qualifier, Won Race for Perfect Weekend
May 10, 2012
Mark Cox returned to "The Rock" to collect top honors in the Hawaya Racing/Vreeland Harley Davidson Pro Drag class at the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals Presented by The Carolina Harley-Dealers Association on May 5-6 at Rockingham Dragway, Rockingham, North Carolina.
Cox, a former AHDRA Pro Dragster National champion, dropped his PD41 bike off the truck to turn a 7.31 ET qualifying time at 162.55 mph. He stood on his time, which was good for the #1 qualifier position of the weekend in the Pro Drag class of 11 bikes.
In first round eliminations, Cox defeated Peter Stimeling with a 7.298 ET at 172.92 mph. In round two eliminations, Mark faced female rider Carrie Seifert Tate, a recent graduate of the Hawaya Racing Nitro Bike School. Mark's 7.167 ET at 168.96 edged Carrie’s strong run of 7.290 at 168.45. Final eliminations slotted Cox against Rich Vreeland. Cox clocked a 7.238 ET at a quick 173.70 mph to win the round and the top Pro Drag honors.
"We couldn't have scripted a better plan for the weekend," said Mark Cox, a North Carolina native. "This was an extremely competitive race weekend. We had to stay consistent because we had some tough competition. We also dealt with some really hot conditions at the track during qualifying. It was no cakewalk! Rich (Vreeland) did an awesome job at the tree, but my plan to keep a consistent reaction was enough to reel him in for the win!"
"It was also a very special win, as I had Recil Cox here supporting me from Cox Harley-Davidson from nearby Asheboro, NC," added Cox. "I used to ride XR 750's for Cox H-D in my Pro Dirt Track days. They have always been a very special family."
Cox was riding a Bill Purvis Motorsports Pro Drag Harley-Davidson, tuned and prepared as usual, by Johnny Vickers of Hawaya Racing.
"I always enjoy working with Johnny," said Cox, one of the few members of the elite 'over 200 mph in under seven seconds' club of Harley racers. "We just have a certain confidence level in each other that’s a winning combination.
"We have a new look this year but with our same awesome sponsor, Bojangles' Restaurant," added Cox. "The Mark Cox Racing crew did a fantastic job with everything. I also want to thank Bill Purvis for the opportunity to ride his bike. Johnny had a lot of new school graduates riding his bikes that I have ridden in the past. The opportunity came through with Bill Purvis and it proved to be a great bike that brought us another victory at our home track at Rockingham. I couldn't be happier!"
Mark Cox Racing is scheduled to run four races this year with Bojangles' Restaurant sponsorship, including AHDRA's Thunder in the Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, Bristol, TN, on August 3-4 and the Jim McClure Nitro Nationals at Rockingham Dragway, Rockingham, NC on Oct. 13-14.
