Good
morning from the JIMS Las Vegas Nationals Presented by Energy One
Clutches. We are back after and a
bit rested after yesterdays grueling day of racing. Grueling only because it was a long day for everyone, but
considering nearly 400 bikes attempted qualifying passes yesterday, everyone
made the best of it and finished the day safely.
Today
is the day. Championships will be
decided and $15,000 is up for grabs at 12 noon in the Screamin’ Eagle
Nitro Harley Shootout.
Stay tuned today for the result ladders on

Qualifying
Day at The Strip
Qualifying
Late Night-
Completed just shy of 11:00pm. We will update any missing final
numbers first thing in the morning.
Good night.
Final
session update- Nitro Harleys still in the last chance qualifying round and a
shocker in the line-up. Vancil
will not make the show after a failed 3rd attempt at getting down
the track. No word on the problems
with the Vance & Hines-Drag Specialties Machine, other than it is loaded
with new parts and pieces and this year has obviously been a getting familiar
with the new tune experience.
Newcomer,
Mark Turner impressed his peers with great passes on the Nitro machine that was
previously owned by Mark Cox. He
just ran his best yet, a 6.76 5at 204.42mph. That should give him his career
best.
Steve
Dorn and the Black Attack team improved big with a final 6.70 best, giving them
an upgrade in positioning for tomorrows show. Mike Romine finishes in 2nd after running his
slowest of the day in the final.
Stordeur and Mancuso sat the final round out with Stordeur resting in
the top spot and Mancuso apparently not up to it with being very ill. All the numbers from the Pros are
coming up.
Sportsman
final qualifying will come much later as they are just taking the track for the
final round at 9:40pm.
Other
notes:
Chip
Ellis won the battle for top spot in Rivera Primo Street Pro with a 9.102 final
round pass, and Lummus followed with his best at 9.128 for the 2nd
spot.
Truett
and Breckenridge were unable to better the marks from Phil Schmidt in Kresto
Pro Drag and he finishes 1st with the 7.522.
Junior
Pippin was able to catch Canadian Doug Ainsworth in the final round and grabbed
his top position with a 8.405.
Ainsworth is now 2nd with a 8.423.
More
from JIMS Pro Fuel. Bad Dave Boss
will have to wait until the 05 season for his competition license in the class
and without his entry counting, the class is now a 8-bike field.
Gabe
Larkins made the cut with the 7.590 bump spot position.
Tom
Bradford was the #1 man in S & S Pro Gas with his 7.529 best over a 7.936
best from David Delullo who obviously has his eyes on a 2nd season
win here in Vegas.
Final
Session is underway in the Pro categories. Update- Mike Lehman of H-D of Palm Beach wins the biggest
celebration on the starting line award after he just busted the JIMS Pro Fuel
record with a 6.59. He will need
to back it up tomorrow.
Nitro
Harley and Sportsman final rounds will begin shortly. It will be the last chance for Doug Vancil who surprisingly
has yet to make the field.
Stay tuned for all the final numbers. This update was posted at 8:51pm. PDT
2nd Round of the Pro
classes completed. Sportsman bikes are out for 2nd session under the
lights. This update was posted at 6:07pm. Final rounds are expected
to begin at 7:30pm.
The
final 16 are set for tomorrows Screamin Eagle High Stakes Shoot Out.
The
roster is as follows:
Robert
Mackay
Larry
Maynhart
Bob
Bentz
Dan
Norlin
Robert
McConnell
Dan
DeGood
Stan
Sheppard
Larry
Fore
Keith
Burley
Jody
Davis
Frank
Lacey
Bill
Lee Jr.
Roger
Sebastian
Kim
Swank
Norlin
won it last year and DeGood took a 2nd place finish in the
2002
Shoot Out. Kim Swank said he came
to Vegas to take home a win and he is still in the contest. Stan Sheppard is all smiles with his
position in tomorrows big show and Bill Lee Jr went through a tough field of
veterans to get his spot in the final 16. Stay tuned for the big money winner tomorrow.
We are back in qualifying action now in
the Pro categories. All the
results coming up at the completion of the rounds.
The
Shoot Out has begun. 15 grand is
up for grabs and over 100 riders are giving it their best on the track for a
shot at the 12,000 top prize and the 3,000 runner up prize.
We
will narrow them down to 16 today, and run them out until the big winner is
crowned tomorrow.
Round
One of qualifying was completed after several delays from oil and liquid clean
ups, so we are a bit off schedule.
It’s Vegas though, the city with no clocks.
A
few round one notes:
H-D
of Palm Beach, FL rider Mike Lehman started his day off right, taking the top
spot in JIMS Pro Fuel. Lehman is
fresh off a new 1/8th mile MPH record and a win in Rockingham
earlier in the month.
A
newcomer to the category of Pro Fuel is Dave Boss of California. Boss a former Pro Gas competitor is
auditioning for his 6.90 license here at The Strip.
Mike
Romine is still flexing his muscle in Screamin Eagle Nitro Harley racing. The Chromatic team is in the top spot
with a 6.587 at 211.33mph.
Drums
Brancaccio riding for DJ Johnson scored 2nd best with a 6.715 at
196.10mph. Over 24 bikes attempted
passes in the opening round and the result was an unlikely qualifying order at
most meets.
Johnny
Mancuso is here just barely. The
Texan was hospitalized shortly after the Rockingham event with pneumonia. He
was not expected to compete here in Vegas, but the thoughts of missing a one
and two National finish got the best of him, and he made the trip here. He needs a better pass in the next two
rounds, after shutting it off early in the 1st, leaving him in the
19th spot.
Mancuso
partner Stordeur had a less than normal pass himself, running side by side with
Joe Timmons. Stordeur is currently
in the 12th spot and Timmons is 13th.
Jay
Tuner is here on the Orangeburg Cycle-Bill Furr ride that has recently been
rebuilt since the rear tire explosion Furr suffered in Texas put both he and
the bike out of competition.
Turner
is in the 5th position after one pass. The Furr team has obviously been working hard back at the
Orangeburg Cycle headquarters in South Carolina. Armon, the younger Furr nailed his best pass since returning
to nitro racing earlier in the season.
He is 3rd in the field with a 7.066 at 196.30mph.
A
full field of Joker Machine Pro Mod riders are here to support the class this
weekend. Canadian Doug Ainsworth
leads the field by one position over Champion to be-Junior Pippin.
Cliff
Dwy the reigning champ had problems early in the pass and is currently 14th
in the field.
Ray
Phipps and the Aces and Eights team are leading the Pro Gas field which I
believe is a first time achievement for the H-D Dealer out of Ohio.&n
bsp; In a rare circumstance this year,
Robert Markham is not yet in the field.
Markham is just shy of a Championship bid in Pro Gas over Brook McCabe,
who could possibly wrap it up before the finals tomorrow.
The
Rivera-Primo Street Pro class is a hot field as always with Lummus, Ellis and
Sternotti making up the front runners so far today.
Tripp
Nobles gave Top Fuel riding a brief try on the Ray Price Harley-Davidson
machine earlier in the year in Bristol, TN.
He
accomplished a six second pass at over 200mph with just a handful of passes
behind him, something most do not achieve in years. He has since changed directions and focused on a big finish
in the already wrapped up Screamin Eagle V-Rod title, and climbed aboard a
Kresto Pro Dragster here in Vegas.
He finished 4th after round one out of 15 riders vying for
the spot. The nitro seems to be a
natural fit for the North Carolina champ.
On
the sportsman side, Greg Krenik from New Mexico is leading the field in 2
classes after the opening rounds.
He is in the top spot in both Red Line Oil Super Gas and S & S Super
Sport classes. Krenik a friend to
many has encountered a tragic couple of months with the unexpected loss of his
wife, and many are pulling for him here in hopes of bringing a little
brightness to his weekend.
The
Screamin Eagle Shoot Out just completed round one and we will be back to give
you the final sixteen order when we get there.
Following the shootout we will resume
qualifying with the Pros. Stay
tuned..we could be here a while.
Good
morning from Las Vegas. The temps
are cool and the skies are sunny and there are a record number of racers spread
throughout the pits here at The Strip.
How
many? No official count yet, but
round one qualifying is underway in Syn3 ET and the line at tech is still
stretched further than the norm this year. A big day is that could turn into a long one with the big
fields.
Following todays round one of qualifying,
the Screamin Eagle High Stakes Shoot Out gets underway. Over 100 entries in, including NHRA
Champ, Craig Treble. Stay tuned
for all the coverage right here.
Good
afternoon from The Strip. We are
under sunny mid 60 degree temps as pit parking continues. The line up was stunning to say the
least. There are hundreds of
motorhomes and rigs waiting to get in for a weekend of excitement at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway. A test and tune
session will be hosted by the track shortly after 6pm.
Just
prior to tonights test and tune, Top Fuel competitor, Tracy Kile of Hatfield,
PA will pledge his matrimonial vows to his bride beneath the archway here at at
The Strip. Congratulations to the
happy couple.
Also
tonight, I hear there is a pit crew track challenge to take place. A battle of
the pit bikes. I will be sure to update the outcome of
that in tomorrows news.
We
kick off the activities tonight at the Harley-Davidson Café, which I
will be departing for shortly.
We
will join you in the morning with all the news from qualifying and the Screamin
Eagle Las Vegas High Stakes Shootout.
