Round One Qualifying Update

The Sportsman classes have completed round one and the Pro's are set for 4pm.

In Round One Sportsman, Tripp Nobles leads the pack in Screamin' Eagle V-Rod with a 10.067 at 122.74mph, followed by Larry Maynhart in the #2 spot with a 11.108 at 123.26mph. Guidera, Wilwert and Vantucci make up the remaining qualifying order.

In Dragmasters Hot Street, Donnie Huffman holds the #1 spot with a 10.713 at 125.96mph followed by Joe Perry and Nick Gonatas in the top three spots out of nine round one entries. Willie Herschberger is the top dog after one round in Redline Oil Super Gas and Champion Alan Nusbaum holds the pole position in Nonpareil Super Sport. Bill Deters is the leader in Performance Corner Super Eliminator with Donnie Huffman, Mike Harrison and Tania Thompson making up the top four out of twenty one entries so far. In SEP, Eleanor Walker is showing them how it's done in the #1 spot followed by Tony Mione at #2, and Eleanor's other half, Charlie in the third spot after twenty five bikes competed in round #1.

Pro Qualifying Round One Update-

It was a challenging round, but it is finally complete. As expected, the hot temps provided plenty of problems for many on the first time out, but many say they feel like they can adjust for the 2nd round, especially with the cooler temps coming in.

In Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley, it looked like a 7.581 was going to the the quickest time, until Doug Vancil and Mike Romine gave it a shot. Vancil's the top seat with a 6.872 @190.67mph and Romine is 2nd with a 6.975 at 199.29mph. Ten bikes in the first round.

In Kresto Pro Drag, Chuck Jones is out front with a 7.724 at 164.11mph. Steve Dorn had a center line infraction, disqualifying is first pass. Dirk Higgins is the #1 man in S & S Pro Stock with a 7.786 @167.36mph and Mark Conner got his wish..the banana back, and he's the number one qualifyer in JIMS Pro Fuel with a 7.002 at 186.48mph and Sam White is the #2 spot with a 8.284. Frank Dove is use to hot temps in Maryland, and he's handling the Kansas heat well with the #1 spot in Hayes Jewelers Pro Gas. Dove's first round pass was a 7.881 @172.45mph. Cliff Dwy holds the #1 spot in Joker Machine Modified with a 8.570 @150.16 and Eddie Lee is #2 with a 8.790 @148.71mph. In Rivera Primo Street Pro Randy Borho grabs the top spot with a 9.816 at 135.74mph ad Verl Smith is #2. Travis Lummus is missing from the qualifying order in the first round after leaving before the tree activated. All the numbers are coming up..I'm typing away..I'll be back at ya shortly.

Round Two Update!

The air improves slightly but Furr improves big taking the #1 spot in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley with a 6.745 at 208.10mph. Vancil and Mike Romine do not improve and hold the #2 and #3 spot.

In JIMS Pro Fuel, Scooter Rajkowski is here but struggling to get down the track and on the qualifying ladder, but Mark Conner keeps a grip on the #1 spot with his 7.002. Bill Bertolette took over the #2 spot with a 7.770.

Steve Dorn recovers big time from his round one DQ pass with a national record pass in session two. The Black Attack-All American Cycle team will be looking to back up the 7.351/176.60mph pass in tonight's final round. The current record is held by Marc Augustine with a 7.363.

In Hayes Jewelers Pro Gas, Bradford improves but not enough to take Frank Doves 7.881 #1 spot. Lee Hitz is third with a 9.336.

In S & S Pro Stock, Dirk Higgins is consistent in the 7's. The Thiel's Wheels-Jon Miller team improved their number one spot with a 7.704 at 167.36mph in round two. Bradford and Guidera make up the #2 and #3 spot.

In Joker Machine Modified, Darren Maudlin appeared and took the #1 spot from Cliff Dwy with a 8.527 and Dwy moves to #2 with his earlier 8.560.

In Rivera Primo Street Pro, Travis Lummus makes a big comeback with a 9.248 @145.56mph for the #1 spot over Randy Borho who moves to #2.

In Screamin' Eagle V-Rod, Tripp Nobles gets in the 9's after a 9.816 at 133.84mph and Donnie Huffman holds his #1 Dragmasters Hot Street spot.

In Red Line Oil Super Gas (9.70) Chris Rivas is the new leader with a 9.831 and Russ Rockwell is #2 with a 9.842.

Wanda Poff takes charge in Nonpareil Super Sport (10.30) with her 10.307, bumping Nusbaum to the #2 spot.

Bill Deters holds on to his 10.916 for the top spot in Performance Corner Super Eliminator (10.90) and Eleanor Walker refuses to budge out of the SEP (11.50) #1 spot with her 11.510. Mark McLaughlin is the #2 guy after a 11.510 of his own.

Final Round Update

Ladies First!! Eleanor Walker keeps her number one spot in SEP and Wanda Poff maintains the top position in Nonpareil Super Sport. Bill Deters keeps the top spot in Performance Corner Super Eliminator and its still Chris Rivas is Redline Oil Super Gas.

Tripp Nobles is still the #1 qualifyer after three in Screamin' Eagle V-Rod, but there is a new order in Dragmasters Hot Street after Joe Perry steps into the #1 spot with a 10.618 at 122.81mph, followed by David Atkins and the former #1 qualifyer Donnie Huffman moves to #3. Travis Lummus is the Rivera Primo Street Pro leader with his 9.248 and Nick Gonatas moves to the 2nd position with a 9.621. Darren Mauldin showed up even stronger in the final round of Joker Machine Pro Modified running a 8.490 at 154.71 holding on to #1 and it's still Cliff Dwy in the #2 spot.

The JIMS Pro Fuel class was in the final round when Scooter Rajkowski had a motor explosion that left him slightly shaken. He's been checked out by the EMT's and released. So competition had resumed, and then came an oil down and a timing device that will have to be replaced..so we are on competiton hold for an undetermined time, while the track is cleaned and timing device replaced.

Only Pro Fuel, Pro Stock and Top Fuel left to go, and we are as anxious as you are for the outcome...stay tuned, and here's your final round numbers as of 9.20pm.

Elimination Day in Topeka

Good morning from Heartland Park Topeka. The sun is blazine in full force and it looks like today may be even hotter than yesterday. It could be a messy round one, as the crews are working hard to get a tune ready for the hot track. Last night's final round of qualifying in the cooling temps made quite the difference in performance and everyone is hoping for the best when elimintions get underway at 2:00pm. We will bring all the news to you later today from the Mid-West Nationals presented by Topeka Harley-Davidson.

Glad to be wrong about that opening round!

Stunning Opening Round at Heartland Park Topeka!

Under the warmest temperatures of the year, and a less than marginal crowd on hand to battle the record heat..it turned out to be a fantastic opening round with the #1 qualifyer Doug Vancil taking out Chicago Joe with a 6.549 at 198.79mph. RMC Racing Teammates Drums Brancaccio and Mike Romine went side by side and it was Romine pulling out the win with a 6.908 at 201.31mph over Brancaccio’s 6.908 at 201.31mph. Not to be outdone, Bill Furr comes out with a six second opener over Jake Silcox, scoring a 6.709 at 206.39mph. The only pair with out a six on the scoreboard but good enough to get to the next round was Jack Romine’s 7.098 over Griz Robinson.

In Pro Fuel, Mark Conner had a free ride to the next round with his competition bye, but why hold back? The yellow banana crossed the stripe with a 6.898. Steve Ruggiero is on to the next round along with Bill Bertolette and Sam White.

In Hayes Jewelers Pro Gas, Frank Dove was upset by Robert Markham after Dove suffered problems at the launch. Ironically, I spoke with Markham this morning, and he fully expected to be taken out in round one by Dove. “I’d give anything to beat Frank,” Markham commented. “He’s fast and I should be going that fast here, but my crew chief is off in Phoenix”. It looks like Markaham will get his wish, and he’ll be back in the next session of eliminations.

Kresto Pro Drag News…Black Attack…All Amercian Cycle..Rider, Steve Dorn, Owner, Mark Elam..your new Pro Drag ET National record holders after backing up yesterday’s record pass in the opening round of eliminations. Dorn’s 7.411 in round one back’s up the 7.351 in yesterday’s qualifying for a new National record.
