Champion Harley-Davidson Alien Nationals presented by Screamin’ Eagle Performance

“It looks worse than it is”. That’s a quote from 1st round qualifying leader, Dave O’Hara. Riders arriving at the Champion Harley-Davidson Alien Nationals were more than skeptical about track conditions at Roswell Dragway. In fact, several, including Chicago Joe and Robin Gauthier elected not to run. It was decided the Pros would run 1/8mile for the weekend.
Steve Huff elected to enter his old Pro Dragster in the Top Fuel category, not feeling comfortable with the bigger Top Fuel machine he purchased from Jim McClure on what he saw as questionable conditions. “I was pleasantly surprised once I got out there, Huff said after qualifying.” I believe I could have entered the big bike after all.”

Kris Becker is all smiles and and says the “Aliens” must be on her side, after running her best 60ft times ever, besting, Ron Houniet in Round Two and Dave O’Hara in the final round passes. Becker improved to the #7 spot in the final round.

The JIMS Top Fuel lead changed in every round, with Canadian, Ron Houniet ending the day with the #1 spot. Houniet says he’s battled with a tire since Phoenix, pulling him left. “We made a decision before the final round to put a used tire with 5 rounds on it back on the bike, and it turned out to be the answer. I can’t remember why we ever took it off in the first place.”

Notes from the Pits:
JIMS Top Fuel
Tommy Sloan was both happy and surprised with his #1 qualifying position in Phoenix, which team owner, Andy Z says he gave him, (Sloan) a lift. “The fuel pump took a dive on us, or we could have run all the way with it out there”.
Here in Roswell, The Out of Time Team blew a motor during test and tuning on Friday, but a stand-by Top Fueler was on the trailer and entered into this weekend’s competition.

O’Hara was thrilled with his trip to the finals in Phoenix, and O”Hara’s team has made a few gearing changes and made the high elevation tune-ups needed, in hopes of a good finish here. The “Hell Racing” team held the #1 spot after round one, and after smoking the tire, lost the #1 spot to Doc Hopkins in Round Two.

Pro Fuel
Kerrigan-replaced a motor Saturday night in Phoenix, but then ignition problems ended their day early on Sunday. The Red Line Oil team scrambled to rebuild the original motor, which showed up at 9pm Friday night here in Roswell. The change was finished at around 230am, which gave the pits quite a roar when they fired it up to check things out.

Pro Stock
Bradford was another electing to go with a new motor after the S & S Hal’s H-D team reported worn out heads which they didn’t have time to change in Phoenix. Seems to be working for them here.

Joker Machine Pro Modified


John Hammock- Fuel problems with his Pro Stock bike and Cam Cover gasket problems with the Modified bike in Phoenix. He hopes that is all taken care of. ”We haven’t found our Mo Jo yet”, Hammock joked this morning. Hammock says he’ll have to catch Lozano, who set a record at last week’s Phoenix race. “I think he will do it again when he gets to the right air.”

Marc Augustine couldn’t be happier for John McMillin, riding his championship Pro Dragster..after giving it a try with dual carbs in Phoenix and then changing it back to single, Augustine says you know the rest of the story..we won and hoping it ends the same way here.

Kim Swank ET Champion, absent from Phoenix, is here in Roswell. Work related issues may keep him from competitng at many events this year, but he hopes to do well here.

Qualifying concluded with little complication and ahead of schedule. Final results will be posted at the conclusion of tomorrow’s eliminations.
