Qualifying Day at MIR
Midnight Madness Makes For Parking Madness!
Good morning from MIR where the line up for the pits seems to have no end. Unlike most AHDRA events, competitor gates open on Saturday morning to allow for MIR's huge Friday Midnight Madness program. While it is inconvenient for racers and officials alike, everyone made the best of it, and we are working hard at getting everyone parked and ready to go.
If the enormous line is any indication, there is a gigantic weekend of racing ahead. Twenty Nitro Harleys on the pre-registration roster and ample more coming in. We are set for a 10am, start as long as everything continues to flow.
Stay tuned for an update once the track is hot..won't be long..it's Budds Creek..and heat is always guaranteed.
Back from MIR qualifying- Sportsman machines on the track and the Pro's are approaching the lanes. Full house of entries, so stay tuned for Round One action later. A very special visitor today..the man himself..Jim McClure and Phyllis are here to catch the action, and it is wonderful to see them. One Jim is all settled and had a chance to visit in the pits- I'll catch a few comments to share.
Back soon with more from MIR.
Round One nearly complete-and Johnny Mancuso currently leads Nitro Harley field. Furr and a few more still in the lanes. Back with the numbers from Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley, and Pro Stock shortly. Here's what we have so far.

Back with Round Two
I spent round two on the sidelines with Jim and Phyllis as the smell and roar of nitro brought him to his feet with big smiles! Mark Cox came out "Cookin Good" moving into the #1 spot with a 6.585 at 210.10mph, Mancuso holds on to #2 after something went away in Round Two. In fact something went away for several of the 22 Nitro Harley entries as the heat picks up. The numbers are coming up soon as Nitro Harley wraps up. Here's a Round Two Update.

Final Round Coming Up Soon and we'll bring you the qualifying order for all the categories of today's competition.
Other MIR Notes- Jamie McNaughton bettered his on V-Rod 1/4 mile E.T. record with a round one 9.794 pass, that will need to be backed up. McNaugton's current record is 9.799. Lummus and Morrow flip-flopped pole positions in Round Two. The pair have returned to good times off the track and good competition on the quarter mile!
Could SteveDorn be after the Kresto Pro Drag Championship?? No doubt..he's made the trip from Oregon to keep his big four winning streak alive. He leads the pack going into the final round.
The Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley pits are full of comments, smiles, thrashing, and maybe a little grumbling as teams get ready for the final chance to get into tomorrow's show.
Jim McClure wasted no time getting back to nitro business, when he gave Robert "Ziggy" Stewart a earful on keeping the bike tuned. Stewart says, he's back to slapping me around, so I KNOW he feels better! McClure is scheduled for a tune-up on his heart next week, which Phyllis says should mean they are getting close on the transplant list. Keep those prayers coming for him.
Back with a final round wrap a little later.

Final Round Underway..Check out the news in Rivera Street Pro..A new #1 qualifyer...not Lummus..not Morrow..Nicholas Gonatas has snatched the spot with a 9.298. Lummus and Morrow ran side by side back to back qualufying rounds, and this was the best yet..Morrows better reaction time gave him the win light in the final round pass, but Lummus finished in the #2 spot with Morrow third. A competiton hold is underway as timing equipment is replaced after a center line infraction from Mancuso..Conner sped by him anyway fighting to stay in the field. Conner will get a re-run after Mancuso's foul prevented him from getting a final round time.
While we are on hold-I''ll get all the numbers ready for you to post, and Nina Henderson made a round through the pits prior today's final Nitro Harley final round and shared these comments from some of the riders.
Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley Pit Notes

Bill Furr
Both ignition wires came loose that round.

Jay Turner
Pro Fuel - Broke
Bulldog Top Fuel bike - Spinning, spinning, spinning

Tommy Sloan
I broke a belt. I'm trying new clutches. I've come out with these rea thin .180 thickness plates . They’re making a lot of . So much in fact that we damaged the belt. The damage happened in the first round. When I hit the throttle in the second round, I snapped the belt.

Steve Stordeur
Round two: Better?
“A little better. We're sneaking up on it.
We’re still slipping the clutch in the low gear but we have the second stage coming in earlier. We won't make last pass. We’re hurt the intake. It's still a little too lean. A piece of it got under the valve. So we have to lap the valve in, re-seat it.”

Johnny Mancuso
“My engine was 200 rpm lower at the starting line than the first run. The clutch came in way too early. Then it really shook the tire. Once the tire shook, it just broke loose because the track is too hot. We thought it was the changes we made. We just missed on our clutch installation. We'll go out this round with the same combination and see what it does.”

Mark Cox
“Again, like I said after round one, we were real soft. But Bill (Furr) gave me a blue pill and we got it stiffened up. Seriuosly, we just stepped it up a little more and the track conditions seem to be favorable today. We're able to keep some fuel in the motor and we're able to get down the racetrack.”

Mark Conner
“DJ's sh*( is a mutt. Tell big Larry to stand on it.” Conner is riding DJ’s American Cycle bike that Tony Mattioli ran in Norwalk. “We're way off on something. We just don't know what it is. We’re running a Hoosier, so we just don't know what air pressure to run.” Conner kidded about his various ‘rides’ this season. “Somebody picked one out and I just hopped on it.”

Doug Vancil
“We smoked the tire. We just put a new tire on it and did some gear changes for the third round. We'll just see what happens this time.”

Jack Romine
“The plan didn't work. Alternate Plan C next. I didn’t shift early enough., Every thing was better. I was trying to run low gear out too far. Watch for short shift this time.”

Mike Romine
“I broke a belt. My incrementals were the best I’ve had in a while. I’m gonna leave it the same and see if I can get a full pass out of it.”

Drums Brancaccio
“We have the jackshaft in it so we're working on the tune-up for it. I think Mike and Jack are really doing a great job tuning it. It ran so much better from 100 to 700 feet that it made the whole run. They have new transmissions ordered for my bike so we'll be back on a multi-speed next time. Jack went great twice. That was Mike's best 330 of the year. I also want to thank Mitch for the opportunity and I'm just ecstatic to be here on the team.”

Final Round Complete..Except for a rerun for Conner!
The 4-sale furr Bike just gave interested buyers quite the demo in the final round of Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley..Furr steals the number one spot with a 6.475 at 214.72 MPH!!! Conner will be back in approx 20 minutes for a shot at bettering his position. While we wait for the final standings in Nitro Harley..here's the way the rest of the classes finished.

It's done..and what a disappointment for Conner, not making the field even after the re-run. They are first alternate though, and no doubt D.J. will make adjustments in case they sneak in the field tomorrow. A couple of surprises on the other end of the ladder..when Tak Shigematsu struggled all day and couldn't make it in tomorrow's show, but Team 911's Tii Tharpe is sounding off the nitro sirens, with his rookie year in Top Fuel and in the field with the biggest names in the class!
He's 13th, as far as he is concerned, it will do as a "lucky" number this time! We'll be back tomorrow with a great day of racing from MIR! Good night.

Good morning from the S & S Cycle Mid-Atlantic Nationals. Today is elimination day, and the sun is shining bright and the temps are rising quick.
The bikes are on the track for a little testing, and we are set to begin around 12:15pm. A note from Testing..Tii Tharpe not only qualified in a tough Nitro Harley field..he just came out for a test and tune run and achieved his first six second pass! 6.81 at 193.15..the quickest and fastest time for the North Carolina native. In Pro Fuel, Sam White is happy with a #1 spot, Nick Gonatas says the #1 spot feels good in Rivera Primo Street Pro. "It was long due, and we knew the bike had it", he added.
Back with more at the kickoff of today's show.

Astounding Opening Round at MIR!
Several big boys out early...photo finish for Mancuso and Turner. Chicago Joe upset the #1 qualifyer Furr..Tii Tharpe advances after cylinder explosion sends Jack Romine out early, and Jake Silcox advances over Doug Vancil. Vancil has struggled with tire smoking all weekend, and it is a rare first round out for the current points leader. Back to that photo finish..Turner and Mancuso ran identical 6.635's but Turners .491 awarded him the win to Mancuso's .494. Steve Stordeur blazed the quarter mile with a 6.660 over Tracy Kile, but unfortunately the run will be DQ'd after contact with the wall, which is a rule violation. Cox vs Cox ended with a win for the Mark Cox Bojangles team, and the quickest time of the round with a 6.594 at 211.73 miles per hour. Drums Brancaccio advanced over Steve Moore in another close one, Drums posted a 6.861 to Moore's 6.879. The numbers are coming up shortly.
