WINSTON-SALEM, NC, September 18, 2007- The All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) and the "Bikers For Babies" campaign joined forces on Sunday, September 16th at Farmington Dragway to raise funds to benefit the March of Dimes.
Over 200 riders gathered at Curly's Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC for a ride procession to Farmington Dragway with picture-perfect weather conditions.
The riders joined over 1,000 others gathered at Farmington Dragway for a day of racing, vendors, live music and the annual Carolina's Full Throttle Magazine Bike Show.
Despite this 1-day event being a non-points race, competitors came together from across the U.S. to put on a great show for this worthy cause.
In Nitro Harley action supported by AHDRA sponsor, Tom Johnson Camping Centers, Bill Furr and Armon Furr of Orangeburg, SC, Jay Turner (Julian, NC), Steve Simmons (Greensboro, NC), Billy Leonard (Greensboro, NC) and Brook McCabe of Roanoke Rapids, NC took the track for ground pounding nitro excitement on the eighth-mile track.
In the "match race" style shoot-out, Bill Furr paired up with Steve Simmons in one of two Nitro final matches with Furr getting the win light with a 5.183. In unique Furr style- the veteran rider (who still holds a long-time track record at Farmington Dragway) turned his bike around at the top end and cruised "under power" back up the return road before parking the Belt Drives LTD machine in victory lane.
In the other final pairing, defending Pro Fuel Champion, Armon Furr paired up with current point's leader, Jay 'The Bulldog" Turner where it was yet another victory for the Furr camp with a 4.387 at 176mph to a 5.096 at 111mph from Turner.
In the Pro Stock/Pro Gas category, Dale Raudenbush of Old Zionsville, PA came away with a victory (4.966-123mph) on the Jon Miller/Thiel's Wheels ride over Keith "Stump" Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC.
In Street Pro/Pro Mod racing, local favorite, Zach Johnson took the win on a solo final after his opponent (Keith Williams) broke. Johnson's wining time was a 5.878 at 127mph.
The Farmington event marked a monumental celebration for GoDaddy.com racer, Valerie Thompson when she grabbed her first event victory of the season in the V-Rod Destroyer category. Thompson of Scottsdale, AZ arrived in Farmington, NC fresh off of a record-setting weekend at the Bonneville Salt Flats and took on Brian Fox of Statesville, NC in the final for the win light with a 5.96 at 114mph over a 6.026 at 117mph from Fox.
In the bracket racing categories, Lane Boger grabbed the victory over Allen Flynt in the ET-No Wheelie Bar final. In the ET-Wheelie-Bar final, it was a father-son match up when Joey and Curtis Talbott paired up for the battle to the finish. In the end, it was the younger Talbott (Joey) taking the honors at Farmington Dragway.
Following the winner's circle celebrations, awards were presented on the stage by Mark and Molly Infield of Carolina's Full Throttle Magazine to the Ride-In bike Show winners. Trophies were awarded in 11 categories and were provided by Hayes Jewelers of Lexington, NC. A hefty number of entries participated in the Bike Show and they were very generous in their donations to the Bikers For Babies charity.
Early numbers show that March Of Dimes collected over $25,000 in donations and dollars are sill coming in to benefit the cause.
The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
