RACE REPORT
Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Northwest Nationals
Presented by Team Latus Motors Harley-Davidson & Buell
August 22-23 Woodburn, OR

Winston-Salem, NC, September 4, 2009 - The All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) competed at the Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon on August 22-23. The chase for the 2009 Championship was on as racers met for the AHDRA's Screamin' Eagle Northwest Nationals presented by Team Latus Motors Harley-Davidson & Buell.

The weather was perfect all weekend for racing as well as for the fans that came out to see the action. The fans who make it a point to attend the Northwest Nationals are a phenom that the racers from the pro classes to the sportsman classes always talk about. These fans are truly dedicated to this great sport!

The points chase is on in most of our classes of competition this year as racers have pushed their bikes to the limits. Fans were surprised by the unexpected sight of a Pro Fuel racer, Toni Froehling from Orting, WA, as his bike exploded going down the track.

Check out all the exciting action from the Screamin' Eagle Northwest Nationals!

Next up in the AHDRA 2009 Screamin' Eagle Championship Series is Rockingham, NC, for the Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Jim McClure Nationals on October 10-11 at Rockingham Dragway.

Screamin' Eagle Top Fuel winner - Phil Schmidt

In Screamin' Eagle Top Fuel, the #1 qualifier was Jay Turner from Julian, NC, riding for Jay Turner Racing, who qualified with a 6.589/216 mph. He is currently the points leader in Screamin' Eagle Top Fuel by 20 points over the local favorite, second qualifier Steve Dorn from Oregon City, OR, riding for Latus Motors Harley-Davidson.

Phil Schmidt from Orangevale, CA, riding for Schmidt Racing, won with a .119/6.928/206 mph against John Breckenridge from Sultan, WA, riding for WFO, who ran a .128/7.414/146 mph.

"On Friday afternoon we attempted to make some test passes but the bike was not running right, requiring me to shut it off before doing the burnout," said Schmidt. "It was a puzzling set of symptoms, with blackened spark plugs and a flow meter that was reading excessive fuel but high exhaust gas temps and lean characteristics. Our team worked feverishly Friday evening (8 p.m. noise curfew did not help) and Saturday morning evaluated the battery, ignition system, fuel quality, fuel lines, barrel valve, etc. Just before the first round of qualifying we changed the injector, which solved the problem, and we qualified third.

"The track at Woodburn was good for the first 60', but loose after that, preventing the big bikes from accelerating like they are capable," he continued. "In the final against John Breckenridge we were running side by side when my tire spun enough to put out the fire in the front cylinder. I got out of the throttle completely, and got back in when the cylinder relit and the bike rocketed forward, giving us the win. The weather was as good as it gets all weekend. Adding the AHDRA Woodburn win to two other recent wins (Woodburn WHRA in July and Salt Lake WHRA in August) and getting us back into the championship points hunt made this Woodburn win especially sweet!" Schmidt is currently fourth in the points, only 67 points behind the current leader, Jay Turner.

Schmidt thanked his crew members, Dan Rusk and Ken Wilson, and his sponsors Lucas Oil, Lyndal Brakes, James Dean of Rebel Design, Superior Sprockets, Harris Industrial Gasses, and Michael McAdoo Photography.

Rush Pro Fuel winner - Chris Streeter

In Rush Pro Fuel the #1 qualifier was Chris Streeter from Cleveland, OH, riding for Lake Erie Racing. He qualified with a 6.72/205 mph, and then made it to the finals to take the win with a .097/6.751/205 mph against Randal Andras from Amelia, LA riding for Fas Coonass Racing, who ran a .089/9.587/90 mph.

Coming into the Bristol race, Lake Erie Racing had not intended to make the long trip out to Woodburn. Streeter was in fourth place and 155 points out of first. But by the time he left the track, seeing that the points race was tightening up, he decided to make the trip. They sure are glad they did!

With good air and a slick track, it made for both tricky tuning and tricky riding. Still, Streeter and the team were on their game. He qualified #1, took the race win, and ran both best ET and top MPH for the race. Not only that, but also he beat his personal best ET, which he had previously set in Bristol. With the exception of the second round of eliminations, when he had a bye and got greedy, spinning the tire, this was one of the best races Lake Erie Racing has had as a team!

Sunday morning the track crew had done a good job of prepping the track, and the track temperature stayed at around 108 degrees. Streeter had a bye in round one of eliminations, and decided to just keep putting the coals to it. As long as he had a solo pass, he wanted to see how far he could push it. He went up to the line in the right lane and launched. The tire stuck, but Streeter kept the bike straight all the way down the track. The crowd cheered as the board lit up with a 6.674 at 208.04 mph, Streeter's career-best ET and his second-best MPH.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ladder Dana Meeks and Will Simplot red-lit against each other and were both disqualified, which gave Lake Erie Racing a bye in the second round of eliminations. In hindsight, the team perhaps let its success go to their heads and got greedy in the second round. They wanted to keep bringing that ET down, but meanwhile the track was getting hotter and more slippery. The smart thing to do would have been to back down on the tune-up, make sure they got down the track, and had a good working tune-up for the finals. Instead, Streeter hit the throttle, charged out to about 100 feet, and the tire went up in smoke right at the point on the track where several other racers were having problems. Now they had to de-tune for the finals, and they were not sure how much.

Randal Andras had worked up the other side of the ladder with a 6.896 and a 7.028. Those were not stellar times, but he had run a 6.82 in qualifying and with tuning help from Rex Harris and Jay Turner, he was definitely dangerous. Furthermore, he was going to put Streeter in the left lane, where he had only made one pass all weekend. After much discussion, Streeter's team settled on a tune-up. The team was pacing up and down nervously in the lanes as the finals for the other classes ran. The sun was getting low in the sky, and the track temperature was just about the same as in the second round as Streeter pulled up into the beams. The tree lit up. Andras got a jump at the light with a .089 to Streeter's .097. From behind, Streeter's tire could be seen to wash to the right hard, but he corrected so fast that the bike straightened right back up. In the first 330 feet, the tire tried to break loose two more times, but each time he reacted quickly to keep the bike in the groove, and the tire held. Down track the motor was singing and the win light came up with a 6.751 at 205.15 mph! In the right lane, Andras had launched hard, but fell prey to that same spot at about the 100-foot point on the track. His tire went up in smoke and he crossed the finish line with a 9.587 at 90.53 mph.

Streeter thanked his sponsors: Barnett Clutches, Electromotive, Chromatic Racing, Streeter Technologies, and Clone Cycle.

Verve Pro Stock winner - Mark Venia

In AHDRA Pro Stock the #1 qualifier was Mark Venia from Toledo, OH, riding for Dyno-Power. He qualified with an 8.107/162 mph.

Venia made it to the finals and scored the win with a .086/8.213/163 mph against John Schaber from Portland, OR, who ran a .095/8.866/149 mph.

"Team Dyno-Power has had to overcome some challenges since the first of the year - particularly in Norwalk, Kansas City, and Bristol. We did some testing since those races and got a handle on some of the issues. The bike ran well at Woodburn and with a degree of consistency we haven't had all year. Ray and Paul continue to refine and improve our track operations, which has also helped a great deal," stated Venia.

He thanked his sponsors: Hal's Harley-Davidson and Dyno-Power.

Pro Drag winner - Rod Anderson

In AHDRA Pro Drag the #1 qualifier was Rod Anderson from Monroe, WA, riding for Speed Twin Cycle Racing. He qualified with a 7.657/168 mph.

Anderson started his first Sunday eliminations in the 2009 AHDRA season with a bye run and advanced to the semifinals against Ricky House from Jumble, TX, riding for Shark Racing. Anderson ran a .109/7.529/172 mph and got the win against House, who ran a .158/7.958/170 mph.

Anderson, now in the finals, claimed the win with a .126/7.597/171 mph against Chris Kirby from Cottonwood, CA, riding for Rocky's Cycle Racing. He ran a .135/7.631/162 mph.

Anderson thanked his crew and his sponsors: Amsoil, Kresto, Mickey Thomson Tire, Vanson Leather, VP Racing Fuel, and S & S Cycle.

Rush Pro Gas winner - James Surber

In Rush Pro Gas, James Surber from Shelter Cove, CA, riding for South County Racing, was the #1 qualifier with a 7.508/154 mph.

Surber scored the win with a run of .414/7.628/145 mph against Karen Wagner from Escondido, CA, riding for Tri-Ryche Racing. Wagner broke at the starting line.

Woodburn is something of a local event for Surber, who has been racing with AHDRA since 2002. "We have enjoyed the people and the experiences that come with professional racing," he said. "We did well in Pro Stock and Super Gas classes and then stepped up to an NHRA Pro Stock Buell, a dream come true, so we really enjoyed coming back and racing with our friends."

He continued, "We never saw high gear all weekend and hurt trans parts on every pass. The track seemed like it would have held our new Junior Pippin Racing horsepower; unfortunately, we never had a full pass to relay to Rick Maney, who tunes for us via the Internet. So, our primary plan was bad all weekend, but the rest was great - going rounds, getting # 1 qualifier, and winning the event. It doesn't get any better!"

Surber thanked Junior Pippin, Rick Maney, Al, family, and friends. He noted, "We will always support AHDRA and the West Coast during our NHRA tour."

K&K Marine Pro Modified winner - Greg Krenik

In K & K Pro Modified the #1 qualifier was Greg Krenik from Corrales, NM, riding for Desert Dawg Racing. He qualified with an 8.611/153 mph.

On Sunday, Krenik joined all of the #1 qualifiers on the starting line, with the Woodburn fans cheering and always making the riders feel great. The day was perfect. In the first round Krenik ran an 8.48 just 0.05 seconds off his national record. In the semis, he faced Nick Stute. Krenik got him on the tree but wasn't ready for the hit of the throttle and it sat him up. He got everything under control and got the win with an 8.52 to an 8.72. "Krenik's going to have to ride this like he did his Pro Stock," said Steve Allstaedt. "With the changes we are trying to make with the wheel and tire, it's going to give a hit similar to what his PS did. We're getting closer on the launch but nowhere near what it's capable of…this is something new for him and it's an experiment in progress."

The finals once again had Krenik facing Randy Borho. Krenik got a huge holeshot and never looked back to take the win with an 8.49 to Borho's 8.66. Then at the top end he found out that Randy had injured his left foot coming out of the water box: his left foot stuck to the track and got run over by his foot peg. Krenik said that he couldn't put pressure on it. "I couldn't believe it when he told me about his foot; his pegs are low, so I know that really had to hurt. I hope nothing's broken," said Krenik.

"What a day!" he added. "I guess we proved that the 8.43 we ran in Rockingham last year was no fluke. 8.40's on both coasts with different fuel. We did this without any 'fine-tuning' like we did at Rockingham last year. If conditions are right and we figure out the rear tire, it could be a really fast weekend in Rockingham this year. I offered to haul Randy's and the Stutes' bikes to Rockingham to make it an interesting Pro Mod session. We had such a great time, as always, in the Northwest, and it is so great to see family and my old NHRA family, Judy & Gene Bergstrom who run Woodburn. It was good to spend some time with them, meet their new puppy, and race on a well-prepared racetrack."

"Actually, Greg broke their track record just to prove to Gene how good his track was!" said Karen Raffa, Greg's wife.

Thanks from the Desert Dawg team to their supporting sponsors and friends: Thunderbird Harley-Davidson, Unique Services Inc., Custom Coating, Mickey Thompson Tires, SA Racing Inc., CP Pistons, Lyndall Racing Brakes, Regina Chain USA, Worldwide Bearing, and Simpson Race Helmets.

Right Quick Street Pro winner - Mike Roberts

In AHDRA Street Pro the #1 qualifier was Lou Gerencer from Elkhart, IN, riding for Hoosier Racing. He qualified with an 8.875/151 mpn.

In the semifinals, Gerencer faced Mike Roberts from Clinton, OH, riding for Bandit Racing. Gerencer ran a .088/8.932/152 mph, but it was Roberts who advanced with a win, running a .071/8.906/152 mph.

Roberts then raced Rich Vreeland from Bloomsburg, PA, riding for Vreeland's Harley-Davidson Racing. Vreeland ran a .204/10.001/139 mph, but that just wasn't enough against Roberts, who ran a .252/8.951/145 mph.

Roberts thanked his sponsors: Joes Hawg Shop, Regina Chain, Barnett Clutches, Brush Bandit, and G & R Trucking.

Bison/Vreeland's Harley-Davidson Super Gas winner - Jeff Stevens

In Bison Racing/Vreeland's Harley-Davidson Super Gas, the #1 qualifier was Matt Spencer from South Jordan, UT, riding for Dilligaf Racing. He qualified with a 9.714/135 mph.

Harley-Davidson of Bloomington/Do-Rock Racing rider Jeff Stevens accomplished a double victory by riding to his third Super Gas win and second V-Rod Destroyer win of the 2009 season during the Northwest Nationals at Woodburn. He was the number two qualifier for the Woodburn event in V-Rod Destroyer and number three in Super Gas. In the finals, he ran a .052/9.633/133 mph to defeat Scott Martin from Wilsonville, OR, who ran a .058/9.610/119 mph.

"Last year we came out here, lost a motor prior to qualifying, and left without earning any points. This time we came away with the double win," said Stevens. "The conditions were excellent and the bikes performed extremely well. To come away with one win is an accomplishment, but to get two during an event is humbling." With one event left on the AHDRA's 2009 schedule, Stevens leads in Super Gas with 518 points.

"We've tried to enjoy our successes this season, put the mistakes behind us, and remain focused on ending the season with a strong finish," he commented. "Currently being number one in SG and second in VRD is nice, but we still have one event - the AHDRA finals in Rockingham, NC - to go. We just need to keep winning rounds."

Do-Rock Racing is sponsored by Harley-Davidson/Buell of Bloomington, French Lick Harley-Davidson, and Lucas Oil Products.

Screamin' Eagle V-Rod winner - Jim Sweet

In Screamin' Eagle V-Rod the #1 qualifier was Lou Gerencer from Elkhart, IN, riding for Hoosier Racing. He qualified with a 9.240/146 mph.

Jim Sweet from Osceola, IN, riding for Sweet Racing, met up with Gerencer and ran a .179/9.536/145 mph to defeat Gerencer's 3.623/9.485/146 mph.

These two racers battled hard against each other all weekend, with Sweet breaking the current AHDRA ¼ MPH record (which was held by Gerencer) of 145.85 mph with a 146.65 during the second round setting a new record. Gerencer got treed during the finals and lost but took back over the AHDRA ¼ MPH record with a 146.74.

Sweet commented, "This was a special win, because my first AHDRA win was at this track last year. After a rough start, without having Debbie with me at the track, it was great to back it up with a win again this year. Congrats to Lou on breaking the VR record. It was fun going back and forth breaking records with him. The Woodburn fans are the greatest, very supportive!"

He thanked his sponsors: Coach Guard, Hoosier Harley-Davidson, Simari's Tavern, and Sheldon and Jay from G&R Trucking "for hauling our bikes out to Oregon for us."

Super Sport winner - Karen Wagner

In AHDRA Super Sport the #1 qualifier was Dean Druschel from Swanton, OH, riding for Poor Boys Racing.org. He qualified with a 10.316/128 mph, and made it to the semifinals against Mark Colburn from Reynoldsburg, OH, riding for MNA Customs. Druschel throttle cable broke, which allowed Colburn to run a .532/10.203/128 mph to advance to the finals. There, Colburn faced off with Karen Wagner from Escondido, CA, riding for Tri-Ryche Racing. Colburn ran a .040/10.448/125 mph, but it was Wagner who claimed the win with a .051/10.378/123 mph.

Wagner thanked her sponsors, M.D.R. and Lyndall Racing Brakes.

Rush Super Eliminator winner - Brad Croneberger

In Rush Super Eliminator, Reggie Mackay from San Diego, CA, riding for Reggie B. Racing, was the #1 qualifier with a 10.904/117 mph.

Brad Croneberger from Valley View, PA, was in his second finals this weekend. He ran a .035/10.250/127 mph against Nick Gonatas Jr. from Corland, OH, riding for Warren Harley-Davidson Racing. Gonatas was also in his second finals this weekend but saw the red light appear, giving the win to Croneberger.

Croneberger commented, "The win in Woodburn really helped me out in the points, putting me in great position going into the finals at The Rock. I was cutting a lot of good lights all weekend and a little bit of luck got me into the finals. The toughest obstacle I had to overcome was the nearly 3,000 mile drive to get there. And speaking of that I would like to thank my dad for driving everything out! I'd also like to thank Boyesen Engineering and Vanson Leathers for helping out."

Screamin' Eagle Performance SEP winner - Andrew Bowman

In Screamin' Eagle SEP the #1 qualifier was Stan Sheppard from San Francisco, CA, riding for Bullit Racing. He qualified with an 11.529/106 mph.

In the finals, points leader Brad Croneberger from Valley View, PA, faced Andrew Bowman from Barberton, OH, riding for Andrew Bowman Racing. Both riders cut great lights all day, but Croneberger red-lit and ran an 11.420/114 mph, giving the win to Bowman, who ran a .087/11.781/98 mph.

Bowman commented, "First, I better thank my fiancée Sarah (pregnant with our twins) because I wasn't going to make the 2500-mile trip due to the expense. She told me that if I had a shot at a championship, I would have hated myself for not going. I would also like to thank my mom; Harvey Horton, Rose and Joey Sternotti for hauling my bike and gear; Mike Roberts for all the tremendous help all season; and my sponsors Chris and Michele Baum (Chris Baum Trucking) and Joe's Hawg shop. This is my first season (hopefully of many - we'll see what kind of money I have after the kids are born) with the AHDRA, and to get an event win this year is just awesome!"

Screamin' Eagle V-Rod Destroyer winner - Jeff Stevens

In Screamin' Eagle V-Rod Destroyer, Nick Gonatas Jr. from Corland, OH, riding for Warren Harley-Davidson Racing, was the #1 qualifier with a 9.236/143 mph.

Jeff Stevens from Bloomington, IN, riding for Do-Rock Racing, snagged two wins this weekend. In the finals, he rode past Gonatas, the #1 qualifier and series point leader, to take the victory with a .055/9.305/142 mph against a .051/9.333/133 mph.

"Last year we came out here, lost a motor prior to qualifying, and left without earning any points. This time we came away with the double win," said Stevens. "The conditions were excellent and the bikes performed extremely well. To come away with one win is an accomplishment, but to get two during an event is humbling," he added.

Syn3 ET winner - Pete Onopko

In Screamin' Eagle SYN3 E.T., the #1 qualifier was Dave Diedrich from Gresham, OR, riding for Ridleys Rides.com. He qualified with a reaction time of .001.

Dean Druschel from Swanton, OH, riding for Poor Boys Racing.org, made it to his second consecutive E.T. finals. He met Pete Onopko from Concord, CA, riding for Peterbuilt Racing, who took the win with a .750/12.40/13.442/97 mph.

Onopko said, "In the semifinals, Druschel had the bye run and told us all he could do was break the beam because he had broken his throttle cable. It was at that point I knew if I won the semifinal race, all I had to do was not catch a red light and not break down myself. Being that I had red lighted two of the three qualifying passes, I was nervous as h- - l! I locked my front brake once I lit the second bulb, and didn't start down the track until I saw the green light up. Like I said before, not the way I would have preferred to win... but I'll take it for sure. Holy crap! This was my very first race. The gravity of that fact still makes me say "holy crap" out loud. Prior to racing at Woodburn, I had only spent two evenings at the Wednesday Night Drags at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.

"The race weekend was one of my best lifetime experiences. Beyond the competitive nature of the actual race, it seemed that everyone was part of one big happy family. I loved it all and I'm definitely hooked. I can't wait to return next year. My wish is that AHDRA will find the means to provide us with a few more races this side of the Mississippi.

"I'd like to give special thanks to Tim Johnson of American Custom Motorcycle Parts and Kevin Benson from Benson Drag Racing. They donated wrench time and surplus parts, and provided me with advice from their years of drag racing experience. I'd like to thank Kinder's Meats for feeding us over the weekend. I'd also like to thank Chuck and Ron, who helped in the pit area, and the Brennan family. Todd Brennan kept me steady and focused at the starting line and Shannon and the boys kept me laughing when we were done."

In Outlaw Fuel the winner was Dana Meeks from Enumclaw, WA, riding for Sternotti/Meeks Racing. His two runs had a combined average of 7.102. The runner-up was Will Simplot from Boise, ID, riding for IRC Racing with a two-run combined average of 9.672.

Next up in the AHDRA 2009 Screamin' Eagle Championship Series is Rockingham, NC, for the Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Jim McClure Nationals on October 10-11 at Rockingham Dragway.
